2016 Toyota RAV4

New for 2016

The 2016 Toyota RAV4 builds on the success of previous years with a host of stylish new upgrades, and adds a new hybrid model for those who want to go green.

The RAV4 Keeps Getting Better

Some may think Toyota would rest on its laurels when it comes to a big seller like the RAV4, but the automaker hasn't slowed down at all--the 2016 Toyota RAV4 compact SUV adds an extensive list of upgrades, all keenly chosen after years of customer feedback. While delivering improved road performance, the interior and exterior design upgrades also enhance both style and comfort, and several high-tech safety features are added to make drivers feel safer than ever.

If that wasn't enough, Toyota took the major step of adding hybrid models to its RAV4 line, as well as a sporty SE model for drivers looking for that extra oomph on the road.

Powertrains and Performance

The 2016 Toyota RAV4 powertrain comes in one of two flavors: the standard gas engine or the hybrid.

The standard gas models feature a 2.5 L four-cylinder DOHC (Double Overhead Cam) engine that produces 176-horsepower and 172 ft-lbs. of torque. It has Dual Variable Valve Timing with intelligence (VVT-i) to improve efficiency, and drivers will notice the smoother ride from an upgraded suspension. It's a six-speed automatic.

Also featured is the available All-Wheel Drive system (AWD). Using Dynamic Torque Control, the system ensures maximum traction by shifting power front and rear.

For compact SUVs, the gas-model RAV4s don't lack power, as they're capable of accelerating 0-60 mph in under nine seconds, and the sporty RAV4 SE adds further enhancements, including a sport-tuned suspension and paddle shifters to the steering wheel for instant, no-reach gear shifting.

Gas mileage is estimated at 24/31 mpg (city/highway),* and efficiency and power can be further modified with up to three selectable drive modes. ECO Mode increases fuel economy, Sport Mode gives a sportier ride and the hybrid models offer EV Mode, which enables the engine to run exclusively on battery power.

Perhaps the biggest addition to the RAV4 line is the aforementioned hybrid engine, specifically in the RAV4 XLE Hybrid and RAV4 Limited Hybrid. Not only increasing fuel efficiency, the hybrid's 2.5 L engine also increases power to 194-hp and accelerates 0-60 mph about a second faster than its gas cousin.

Additionally, the hybrid features electronic on-demand AWD and achieves 34 mpg in the city,* an increase of almost one-third. This efficiency can be tracked in real time with the RAV4 hybrids' comprehensive energy monitor.

Features and Trims

Starting at $24,350,** the 2016 Toyota RAV4 includes many features standard as well as additional options for higher-end models, such as the RAV4 SE and RAV4 Limited Hybrid.

Standard on all exteriors are roof rails, daytime running lights and headlights with auto on/off, power outside mirrors, blind spot mirrors and a rearview camera. Additional options include LED headlights, a power tilt-slide moonroof, front and rear parking sonar and the impressive Bird’s Eye View Camera for those tight parking situations.

Interiors feature cruise control and audio controls integrated in the steering wheel, six speakers, three 12V power outlets, plus USB and Bluetooth®. Additional upgrades include advanced tech like a touchscreen panel display featuring the Entune® App Suite, as well as Siri integration and integrated audio navigation. For comfort, there's dual-seat climate control and individually heated seats.

For an even bigger boost in tech, Toyota Safety Sense™ P (TSS-P) is an available option, a safety package that includes pedestrian detection, Lane Departure Alert and Dynamic Radar Cruise Control.

Design

The 2016 Toyota RAV4 brings the compact SUV to new stylish heights. The refreshed redesign features a sleek new front end, as well as updated side lower exterior panels. The RAV4 SE also features the S-Code paint design with added silver elements that highlight the bumpers and fenders.

The wheel design has something for everyone, as all models have their own look. These include 17-inch steel or chrome wheels, and the RAV4 SE and RAV4 Limited Hybrid come with special 18-inch alloy wheels.

The interior shows all the right touches with upgraded materials designed for both comfort and noise/vibration reduction. It's not only a smooth ride -- it's a quiet one, too. Also standard are eight cup holders and 60/40 split rear seats that fold down to give a whopping cargo capacity of up to 73.4 cubic feet.

Safety

All 2016 Toyota RAV4 models come with four-wheel ABS anti-lock brakes standard. Also standard are tire traction control (TRAC), front and side airbags and a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS). Important for families, the RAV4 includes child seat anchors and child-protector rear safety locks.

Bottom Line

The 2016 Toyota RAV4 keeps things on the cutting edge while still maintaining the RAV4 line's stalwart reliability. The new edition gives drivers both style and substance with key updates to its exterior and interior as well as innovative new electronic sensor systems for keeping safe and maneuvering through the tightest of spots. Want sportier or hybrid options? The RAV4 has them and more.
